So you drink smoothies to lose some pounds or maybe you drink smoothies the morning after an alcoholic night out as a 'detox' remedy. But if you think your delicious, fruit-packed shake is anything other than a green health juice, you could be deluding yourself. Most smoothies are ridiculously high in sugar - in fact, some can pack in as many grams of sugar as there are in two cans of Coke!
Data from Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola contains 10.6g of sugar per 100ml – so that’s 35g in a 330ml can (equivalent of 7 teaspoons) and 26.5g in a 250ml can (equivalent of 5 1/2 teaspoons).
There has been some research to show that if you take in exactly the same amount of energy in a liquid form instead of a solid, you will consume more calories later because the liquefied energy doesn’t satisfy your appetite as well as the solid food.
As soon as you start blending fruit you start changing the natural bonds and this then results in turning natural good sugars into bad healthy sugars. Please remember that with all good sugars please make sure you consume these in moderation.
Taking the above into consideration - when you start these fad diets of smoothies you are in fact starting to make your body crave and depend on sugar and everyone I've spoken to has always asked why they don't lose weight on these diets... I'll let you figure this out after you've digested all of the information I've provided!
Stick to eating fruit and vegetables in their natural form - chewing with our teeth, how we were born to eat!
